Who knew that when we did the cancer walk in October, that my Mom would be diagnosed with cancer a few weeks later?
My Mom was diagnosed with thyroid cancer this month. She had surgery on November 13th and they removed a 3.2 cm tumor from around her thyroid that was aggressive and had already started pushing through the trachea. Her Doctor, appropriately named Dr. Slaughter, was able to remove all visible cancer cells and said that the rest will be taken care of by the radioactive iodine that she will receive the 1st week of December.
She will have a full recovery and should have no further problems. We are hoping she will be back to "normal" by January. She will finally be able to lose the weight that she has been wanting to and not feel like she's "choking" all the time.
We are glad that this was not any worse. Had she not been so proactive in getting care, we could have lost her. I hate to think like that, but its true. Let this be a lesson to all of you who don't think its important to have regular checkups and to fight what your Doctor says if you feel that there is something wrong. Doctors aren't always right, and if they don't do the tests then how do they know that you don't have something wrong.....
